This Is Just to Say

Check out what other slicers are writing: http://twowritingteachers.wordpress.com/.

This Is Just To Say

I have finished
the sub plans
needed in
8 hours

and which
you may not
understand
at all

Forgive me
I tried to
make the lesson work
without me there.

Note: I would have rather eaten juicy plums, much more delicious than my sub plans.

This Is Just To Say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

  1. I really like using this mentor text poem idea. Would be so much fun to try with kids.

  2. sub plans, wondering how we tolerate writing sub plans when the subs do their own thing anyway-UG!

  3. I love using this model for sub plans. What a way to crack open the frustrations of leaving plans behind when the key element has to be missing.

It made me smile as sub plans are on my to do list for today.

  5. I love that poem, yours and Williams. It rolls around my head but can't put a spin on it for me.

  6. I read aloud Love that Dog almost every year. This is just to say...you are a fine poet. Good luck returning after the sub.

  7. Sub plans are like throwing a message in a bottle into the ocean. I enjoyed your poem!

  8. Creative & fun way to tell your idea about sub plans-'which you may not understand at all'. Having a sub is sometimes more trouble than working, isn't it? I hope you have a successful day off & your class does well with the plans.

  10. Maya, what a great poem. I love what you did with it. I use this poem all the time with students. They love apologizing for something they are really sorry for! It's a very easy style to mimic.

  11. Such a coincidence. I just finished my post and needed to start writing sub plans. I have a great sub for tomorrow, so I know he'll make the lesson work!

  12. I'm making a copy to put into my sub folder - let's hope the sub has a sense of poetry and humor.

  13. Brilliant! A much-needed chuckle in a not so great day. Thanks Maya! :)

  14. This is so perfect! I love the nod to William Carlos Williams. Have you seen his picture book biography??

I had to write sub plans (guest teacher plans, we call them) for tomorrow as well. Two P.E. teachers are subbing for my honors language arts class. Hmm. That should be interesting, right?

  15. Maya,
Love what you did with this mentor text! Are you familiar with Love That Dog by Sharon Creech? This poem reminds me of the narrator, Jack and his journey with poetry. Hope your day away from the classroom goes smoothly. I too was at school late today polishing up my sub plans for tomorrow! ~Theresa
